Office workers navigating performance review season may increasingly find their annual appraisals, compensation decisions, and career feedback drafted with the help of artificial intelligence, according to recent survey data.
Manager Adoption of Workplace AI Tools
A survey of 1,000 managers conducted by Headway found that 33 percent of respondents had used artificial intelligence to draft feedback or prepare performance reviews, while 31 percent turned to automated tools to help resolve team conflicts. An additional 27 percent reported using AI to prepare for uncomfortable discussions, and 57 percent utilized the technology to script or rehearse difficult conversations beforehand, according to the report.
While the 33 percent figure for performance reviews marks a slight decrease from 41 percent in a similar survey conducted a year prior, the practice remains widespread among management personnel looking to save time on administrative tasks.
Limitations and Employee Monitoring Concerns
Experts note that delegating sensitive personal evaluations to automated systems risks removing essential human elements like empathy and trust, resulting in feedback that can read as superficial. Furthermore, survey details do not clarify whether managers rely on AI strictly for minor edits and grammar corrections or for generating entire performance evaluations.
Beyond review authoring, separate data from Owl Labs' State of Hybrid Work survey involving 8,000 global workers indicates that 58 percent of employees believe their employers have implemented AI-based monitoring tools, pointing to broader workplace integration.
