Capcom announced plans during its Capcom Open Conference RE: 2026 to update its proprietary RE Engine into an engine built for the AI generation. Presenter Satoshi Ishida detailed project "REX," an initiative comprising six distinct programs designed to integrate artificial intelligence and machine-learning technology directly into the publisher's core game development pipeline.

Targeting Backend Infrastructure and Tools

The REX initiative focuses on technical performance and developer workflow improvements rather than generating visual art assets or character models. According to reporting from Gamebiz via IGN, tools within the suite include Re:Dox, which standardizes disparate data types under unified rules for faster processing. Another program, RE:UI, provides AI-assisted optimization for the engine's internal development interfaces.

To streamline active game development, Capcom is introducing RE: Runtime to execute real-time animations for large groups of objects and characters simultaneously, rather than processing them individually. Additionally, RE: Flows aims to simplify mechanic design by translating gameplay ideas into a standardized programming language.

Addressing Modern Development Complexity

Capcom cited the growing technical scale of modern video games as a primary driver for the engine overall. Data management overhead has increased significantly, making routine modifications time-consuming across large teams. With over 2,000 developers of various nationalities currently utilizing RE Engine, Capcom stated that standardized systems are necessary to make the tools universally clear.

The focus on pipeline efficiency aligns with Capcom's existing public policy regarding artificial intelligence. The company previously affirmed that it would not incorporate AI-generated assets into finished games, choosing instead to restrict machine learning to internal productivity and workflow optimization.
