macOS 27 Golden Gate Lets Users Disable AI File Name Suggestions

macOS 27 Golden Gate includes AI-generated naming suggestions for files and folders, but users who find them distracting can disable the feature in Finder. The setting controls suggestions shown while renaming, saving and editing files on a Mac.

What the feature does

When a user renames a file or folder, Finder can display one or more proposed names in a small Suggested popup. According to the setting’s description, macOS generates these proposals from the file’s contents and the names of other files in the same folder.

The feature may help when a suitable name is not immediately obvious, but it can also interrupt an established filing workflow. The iDownloadBlog tutorial’s author reported that suggestions sometimes appeared after manual renaming had already begun and were not always relevant or accurate. The author also described accidentally selecting a proposal and replacing a manually entered name.

How to switch it off

Open Finder, choose Finder > Settings from the menu bar, and remain on the General tab. Clear the “Suggest file names” checkbox to stop Finder from presenting these recommendations on that Mac. Finder Settings can also be opened with Command and the comma key.

One setting per Mac

The preference must be changed separately on every Mac where the suggestions are unwanted. If proposed names continue to appear after the checkbox is cleared, the tutorial recommends relaunching Finder or restarting the Mac.

Disabling the option removes naming suggestions from Finder; the source does not indicate that it disables the other AI tools introduced with macOS 27, such as creating Safari extensions or Siri shortcuts from descriptions and extending or reframing photos.
