Godot 4.8 Enters Feature Freeze as Dev 7 Adds Refactoring and Runtime Editing Tools

Godot 4.8 entered feature freeze on September 29, 2026, shifting development toward bug fixes and regressions ahead of the beta phase. The final development snapshot, Godot 4.8 dev 7, adds project-wide symbol renaming, runtime CanvasItem manipulation, reusable physics query results and broader support for touch interfaces and mobile accessibility.

Safer Refactoring in the Editor

The editor can now rename symbols across a project while distinguishing identifiers from matching text in comments, strings or unrelated local scopes. Because the tool arrived immediately before feature freeze, it is marked experimental and must be enabled manually. Developers therefore have access to a frequently requested refactoring feature, but Godot is still treating it as a preview that needs additional testing.

Editing While the Game Runs

Godot 4.8 also integrates runtime manipulation of CanvasItems from the game view. Developers can move, resize, rotate and scale elements, modify pivots and use the editor's shared undo and redo system. Double-clicking an object in the running game can open its scene, while changes to shortcut handling and cursor updates are intended to make remote editing more responsive.

Rendering gains animated decals, while TabBar and PopupMenu receive native touch support. Common interface elements can also trigger sounds through a new audio theme item type and the existing theme override system, although custom controls cannot yet play those theme sounds.

Lower-Allocation Physics Queries

New methods for PhysicsDirectSpaceState2D and PhysicsDirectSpaceState3D can write query data into reusable, strongly typed result objects. This allows projects to avoid creating fresh dictionaries and arrays for every supported query and removes some manual dictionary lookups and type declarations. The snapshot presents this as a mitigation for allocation overhead rather than a complete resolution of the underlying issue.

Mobile Access and Preview Limits

AccessKit support now extends to iOS and Android, following its earlier desktop integration in Godot 4.5. The mobile implementations do not yet match all desktop capabilities, and the iOS version lacks support for editable text fields.

The release contains 182 fixes from 80 contributors and is built from commit c971f93e7. Its .NET build now requires .NET 10.0 or newer, replacing .NET 8 as the minimum. As a pre-release build, it may contain regressions or risk project data; one listed issue prevents Steam Deck's built-in controls from working in Linux exports unless users switch from Gaming Mode to Desktop Mode.
