Low-energy chip developer Efficient Computer Co. announced today that it has raised $97 million in a new funding round led by TQ Ventures. The investment included participation from Eclipse, Union Square Ventures, Giant Ventures, Triatomic Capital, TO Capital, TF Capital, Mana Ventures, Toyota Ventures, Overmatch, and Borderless. This latest round follows a $60 million raise in February, bringing the company's total funding to $650 million.

Addressing Data Movement and Power Overhead

Efficient Computer is focused on commercializing a dataflow processor architecture designed to drastically reduce power consumption compared to conventional x86 chips from vendors like Intel Corp. and Advanced Micro Devices Inc. Modern CPUs and GPUs consume substantial energy due to overheads associated with control logic, state maintenance, and rapid data transfers across the chip. According to the company, its approach coordinates operations to reflect application dataflow directly, which cuts unnecessary data movement while preserving performance per watt.

While specialized AI accelerators often achieve efficiency by sacrificing general programmability, Efficient Computer aims to keep its processors adaptable for general-purpose workloads beyond standard inference algorithms. Co-founder and Chief Executive Brandon Lucia noted that complex edge devices require processing capabilities that go beyond dedicated AI routines.

Commercial Focus and Market Traction

Although dataflow architectures have long been studied in academia, widespread adoption has historically been limited by software development challenges. Efficient Computer designed its hardware alongside matching software tools to simplify programming for varied computing tasks.

The startup's immediate commercial target is battery-powered devices, such as small autonomous drones and robotics systems, rather than data center servers. According to TQ Ventures partner Andrew Marks, the company has completed four chip tape-outs and begun shipping hardware in volume. Efficient Computer has not made public its financial revenue or customer list, but reported strong demand for its initial product, the Electron E1 chip. The newly raised capital will be allocated toward scaling manufacturing volumes and expanding shipments.
