Valve has announced plans to revamp the Steam storefront by replacing its manually curated store promotions with personalized, dynamic recommendations. According to details shared in a Steamworks developer update, the platform will phase out the traditional calendar-based approach for its prominent Discounts & Events section in early 2027.

Moving Beyond Manual Curation

Currently, the Discounts & Events area at the top of the Steam homepage relies on fixed promotional slots scheduled directly by Valve or participating developers. Valve plans to replace these fixed placements with dynamic recommendations tailored to individual users, leveraging recommendation mechanics similar to those powering its existing Discovery Queue. In the interim, Valve has paused scheduling new curated promotional placements, such as Weekend Deals, Midweek Deals, and Daily Deals, though existing scheduled promotions will still be honored.

Testing and Expected Performance

In preliminary testing of the algorithmic approach, Valve reported that showing personalized recommendations in the featured section exposed ten times as many games to users on a given day compared to the manual calendar format. The company noted that this increased exposure led to measurable rises in store page visits, wishlist additions, and cart additions across the platform.

Impact on Developers and Audiences

The transition aims to remove the limitation of a narrow, fixed calendar, allowing a wider variety of discounted games and events to reach interested players automatically. Valve plans to release updated developer tools ahead of the rollout to help studios manage their own sale events without relying on direct coordinator approvals. While the automated target system may improve visibility for specialized games among target audiences, it also shifts discovery away from broad, universal promotional spotlighting.
