Google is replacing its customizable Gemini Gems feature with a modular instruction system called Skills, according to a report from Android Central. The new system begins rolling out to Google Workspace users on October 5, followed by the consumer Gemini app on October 13, setting up a multi-month phaseout of the original Gems feature.
Modular and Stackable Instruction Sets
Where Gems functioned as standalone custom bots built around specific instruction sets, Skills act as reusable components for complex workflows. Organizations and individuals can use Skills to capture writing templates, internal processes, and brand guidelines, then apply them across recurring tasks. Unlike Gems, multiple Skills can be stacked together for a single request, and Gemini can automatically identify when an existing Skill applies to a user prompt.
Open Standard Format and Cross-Platform Limitations
Skills are built on the open SKILL.md format using Markdown, designed to make instructions portable across compatible platforms. However, Google will not automatically synchronize Skills created between personal Gemini accounts and Workspace environments. Users who require identical instructions across both personal and business tiers must manually create the Skill in each destination.
Phaseout Timeline for Existing Gems
The retirement of Gems will take place across several stages starting November 17, when existing Gems move to Gemini's Settings section where they will temporarily remain accessible. Google plans to maintain Gems access for enterprise and business accounts through at least March 1, 2027, while education accounts will retain access until at least June 1, 2027. Any remaining Gems will ultimately be converted into draft Skills.
