Valve Expands Steam Deck Framerate Telemetry for Developers

Valve has updated its Steam partner dashboard to give game developers access to more detailed performance analytics for titles played on the Steam Deck. The expansion builds on existing player telemetry to help studios better understand real-world game behavior on handheld hardware.

Framerate Distribution in the Partner Dashboard

The update introduces a dedicated framerate distribution chart to the Steam partner landing page, located under the Steam Hardware Compatibility Review section within Technical Tools. The new display sits alongside existing metrics such as average framerates and direct customer feedback.

The metrics rely on anonymized performance data collected from Steam Deck users who have explicitly chosen to opt in to telemetry sharing with Valve.

Identifying Real-World Optimization Bottlenecks

By providing full distribution curves rather than simple averages, Valve aims to offer developers a clearer view of player experiences. Average framerates can obscure performance drops or be distorted by user settings, such as hardware FPS limiters that cap performance even on well-optimized titles.

The new distribution breakdown enables developers to pinpoint specific scenarios where framerates regularly drop below standard targets like 30 frames per second, highlighting clear targets for future game optimizations.

Current Limitations and Deck Tier Access

At present, access to the expanded telemetry dashboard is restricted to titles that have already received Steam Deck Verified status. Games listed in the Playable or Unsupported categories do not yet have access to the framerate distribution data.
