Stack Overflow has released a retrospective analysis comparing its recent Developer Survey results, showing that AI tool usage among developers climbed from 62% in 2024 to 79% in 2025. Despite the expansion in daily adoption, overall user trust and positive sentiment regarding synthetic code generation dropped across all developer groups.
Gateway Tools Lead as Autonomous Agent Usage Doubles
ChatGPT and GitHub Copilot remain the primary access points for AI assistance, with 82% and 68% of assistant users selecting them respectively in 2025. Newer platforms recorded smaller initial adoption footprints, with Claude Code at 41%, Perplexity at 16%, v0.dev at 9%, Bolt.new at 7%, and Lovable.dev at 6%.
Autonomous agent implementation grew rapidly according to Stack Overflow's data. After 31% of respondents reported using agents in 2025, an April 2026 pulse survey revealed agent usage nearly doubled to 59%. Usage was driven predominantly by daily users and individuals in executive roles, with Claude Code's agent usage expanding from 41% to 55%. Among specific IDE tools, Cursor logged 17.9% usage in enterprise environments, while Windsurf captured 4.9% and Aider reached 1.9%.
Student Caution and Falling Confidence
Although AI adoption among students learning to program rose from 63.0% in 2024 to 73.3% in 2025, favorable sentiment dropped sharply from 72.2% down to 52.8%. Student skepticism quadrupled over the same period, growing from 6.4% to 26.3%. Across the broader survey population, positive sentiment fell from 72.0% to 59.7%, while negative sentiment rose from 6.4% to 20.4%.
Confidence in AI output accuracy also decreased among students, with moderate or high trust sliding from 49.1% in 2024 to 37.4% in 2025. When identifying issues with AI outputs, 20.0% of respondents noted losing confidence in their personal problem-solving skills, and 16.3% found it difficult to understand how or why the generated code worked. Looking ahead to potential automation, 61.3% stated they would still seek human assistance to fully understand complex topics.
Workplace Nuance and Evolving Stacks
Workplace settings continued to shift past binary remote or office models. In 2025, 32.4% of developers worked fully remotely, 17.9% operated strictly on-site, and 37.1% followed structured hybrid models. The US led in fully remote work at 45.0%, while India recorded the highest share of on-site professionals at 30.5%. Overall job satisfaction remained divided, with 47.1% of developers reporting feeling complacent, 28.4% unhappy, and 24.5% happy.
Foundational engineering infrastructure continued its steady growth alongside AI adoption. Postgre SQL usage expanded to 55.6% in 2025, while Docker reached 71.1%, Kubernetes grew to 28.5%, and Terraform rose to 17.8%. In collaboration tooling, Microsoft Teams usage reached 53.1% in 2024, whereas Zoom dropped to 40.0% and Slack adjusted to 43.9%. Jira and Confluence remained steady at 46.4% and 32.8% respectively in 2025.
