Shopify has introduced Canvas, an AI-powered site-building tool that allows merchants to create and modify their online storefronts through a chat interface. Powered by Shopify's existing AI assistant, Sidekick, the platform updates the store's code live while displaying a rendered, interactive layout as users issue conversational commands.

Real-Time Visual Editing and Architecture Changes

Unlike standard static preview generators, Canvas renders the underlying code directly, allowing merchants to test animations, interactions, and multi-device responsive views in real time. Sidekick captures screenshots of the workspace to maintain visual context alongside the user, and merchants can manually click elements to make direct edits alongside chat instructions. To support this workflow, Shopify adjusted its underlying theme architecture to simplify how store logic, structure, and design files are read and updated by the AI.

Target Audience and Current Limitations

The tool targets online sellers looking to construct customized stores without hiring developers or manually manipulating modular theme blocks. However, the initial release faces several material constraints. Canvas is currently limited to desktop devices and lacks support for third-party themes, app blocks, extensions, localized markets, translations, theme updates, and broad rollout features, though Shopify reported plans to address these gaps in future iterations.
