Hardware manufacturer Pimax has announced the Spation, a compact living-room mini PC designed to deliver high-performance desktop gaming and virtual reality capabilities. Featuring a vertical, box-like chassis, the unit is intended to sit alongside home entertainment setups while offering significantly more rendering power than standard portable gaming laptops or handhelds.
Desktop-Class Hardware Capabilities
According to PC Gamer, the Spation can be configured with either an AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT or an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 Ti graphics card, paired with an AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D processor. Prebuilt configurations include 32 GB of DDR5 RAM, a 1 TB solid-state drive, and a 1000 W SFX power supply. Connectivity options span Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4, alongside a rear port selection featuring two DisplayPort 2.1 connections, one HDMI 2.1 output, a single USB4 port, and six USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports.
Modular Architecture and Barebones Options
Internal renders reveal a compact structure reminiscent of Mini-ITX builds, utilizing a PCIe riser cable to position the graphics card flat against the reverse side of the enclosure. The chassis features removable front and rear panels with ventilation designed for thermal management. In addition to fully configured systems, Pimax plans to sell a barebones kit that allows users to supply their own graphics card, memory modules, and storage drives.
Dual Operating System Support
Pimax is pitching the Spation with support for both Windows and SteamOS, alongside plans to bring a dedicated client for its Pimax Play software to Linux. While SteamOS provides a console-style interface for TV play, PC Gamer notes that Windows remains the more practical choice for virtual reality applications due to ongoing development for Nvidia graphics support under SteamOS. Pimax has not yet announced official pricing or a release date for the system.
