OpenAI announced on October 5, 2026, that it is introducing visual ad formats within ChatGPT alongside an expanded suite of ad measurement tools and partner integrations. The company stated that the ad expansion is designed to reach a broader market beyond subscriptions, serving a platform audience that OpenAI reports at 1.2 billion people each week.
Visual Ad Testing and Guardrails
The new format displays images highlighting product usage, visual inspiration, or brand experiences during image generation in ChatGPT. OpenAI plans to begin testing the feature in the United States in late October 2026 with an initial set of advertisers.
Ads will carry distinct labels and remain separate from user-generated images. OpenAI emphasized that commercial placements have no influence over ChatGPT's generated answers, and conversational context will be screened automatically and manually to prevent ads from appearing in sensitive or emotionally vulnerable settings. Qualifying advertisers will also gain access to negative phrase targeting to align with internal brand requirements.
Measurement and Attribution Ecosystem
To support advertiser reporting, OpenAI detailed integrations across pixel tracking, its Conversions API, and third-party measurement partners. Customer data platforms including Hightouch, Tealium, and LiveRamp will allow businesses to stream conversion data directly into the platform to optimize ad campaigns. An Event Quality Score tool will help advertisers evaluate signal fidelity.
OpenAI is working with mobile and web attribution services such as AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Adjust, and DV Rockerbox, while collaborating with Haus, Measured, and WorkMagic on geo-based incrementality testing. Early data cited from initial campaigns indicated that over half of eligible one-day view-through conversions occurred within an hour of an ad impression. Partners also reported lower acquisition costs and high ratios of first-time site visitors among initial test campaigns.
Brand Suitability Pilots
OpenAI is establishing brand suitability evaluation pilots with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science. Both verification firms will assess how OpenAI's automated and human oversight guardrails enforce brand safety standards within controlled environments.
The evaluations aim to give advertisers third-party visibility into placement safety without granting access to private user conversations or user data.
