The National University of Singapore's innovation and enterprise arm, previously known as NUS Enterprise, has evolved into NUSX. Announced at the A5X conference in Singapore, the organization set targets to generate US$1 billion in financial returns and positively impact one billion people by 2035 while expanding international venture-building initiatives.

Automated IP Matching and Cross-Border Ties

To accelerate the translation of laboratory discoveries into viable businesses, NUSX introduced Nova, an artificial intelligence platform designed to analyze university research. The tool scans academic output to identify potential commercial applications, patent licensing opportunities, and corporate partnerships.

Alongside the software roll-out, NUSX established a venture-building partnership with Munich-based innovation center UnternehmerTUM. The collaboration links European industrial engineering and customer networks with Singapore's Asian market access and capital ecosystem, creating structured pathways for early-stage startups before international expansion.

Infrastructure Realities and Healthcare Applications

Discussions at A5X emphasized the physical limits of scaling advanced software. Google Cloud Technical Director Dr. Orna Berry noted that energy supply, data center connectivity, and compute availability remain primary operational bottlenecks for AI expansion, citing sustainable infrastructure models such as Finland's Hamina data centers.

Specialized deep-tech startups demonstrated how focused clinical applications bypass broader infrastructure constraints. Seattle startup NewDays.ai, founded in 2024, detailed its platform combining generative AI with licensed human clinical oversight to deliver targeted cognitive interventions for dementia care.

Venture Acceleration in Defense Tech

The conference highlighted rapid prototyping pipelines designed for complex engineering challenges through the Singapore Defense Tech Hackathon. Winning concepts included NeuroMech's brain-computer interface for controlling unmanned ground vehicles and MAELSTROM's coordinated micro-missile architecture engineered to intercept hostile drone swarms.
