New Relic Launches Ground Truth CLI for Terminal-Based Observability

New Relic has introduced the New Relic Ground Truth CLI, a command-line utility augmented by the New Relic Autopilot API that brings headless observability directly into developer terminal workflows. The tool is designed to help software engineers and autonomous AI agents investigate production incidents, verify service recovery, and retain operational context without switching to web dashboards.

Headless Observability in Developer Workflows

Traditional incident resolution often requires engineers to constantly toggle between code editors, web dashboards, and chat platforms to gather system context. The New Relic Ground Truth CLI addresses context switching by embedding core platform investigation tools into the terminal interface.

The CLI acts as a unified interface connecting to New Relic capabilities, including Autopilot, NerdGraph, and memory APIs. By combining telemetry data with operational context, the tool enables human developers to inspect underlying system changes while giving AI agents structured access to analyze production events.

Contextual Investigation and Recovery Verification

Through the command line, teams can query operational metrics and inspect services, logs, deployment changes, and active alerts. The CLI allows engineers to establish and evaluate concrete service recovery criteria straight from the terminal, automating post-incident validation to confirm whether a service has actually stabilized after a fix.

The interface also captures and stores operational evidence generated during an investigation. This historical record allows developers to hand off active troubleshooting sessions to colleagues or pause and resume diagnostic work without repeating initial diagnostic steps.

Integrating Telemetry Into AI and CI/CD Pipelines

In addition to direct human usage, the utility provides programmatic access for external scripts, CI/CD pipelines, and AI coding applications. According to Camden Swita, Head of AI at New Relic, moving operational intelligence away from traditional web dashboards and into headless command-line interfaces allows both developers and automated tools to make informed deployment and recovery decisions directly within their working environments.
