macOS 27 Golden Gate adds native screen recording with system audio, adjustable Liquid Glass transparency and several Apple Intelligence features for organizing tabs, naming files and building automations. Cult of Mac's guide, published September 26, 2026, says the operating system was released earlier that month as a refinement of macOS 26 Tahoe.

More control over the interface

Users can change the intensity of the Liquid Glass effect during setup or later under System Settings > Appearance. The slider moves between a more tinted presentation intended to improve readability and a more transparent glass effect.

Golden Gate also reports when an app continues running after it has been quit. Users can stop that activity from the app's Dock menu or manage individual apps under Login Items and Extensions. Disabling it can interfere with software that depends on background syncing, including Google Drive and Dropbox.

AI handles tabs, files and shortcuts

Safari can use Apple Intelligence to group related tabs automatically or suggest groups for user approval. Finder can propose filenames based on a file's content and type, provided the Suggest file names setting is enabled.

The Shortcuts app can create an automation from a natural-language description instead of requiring users to assemble every action and trigger manually. Safari offers a similar prompt-based tool for creating extensions, although those generated extensions cannot access Mac data or load remote content.

On-screen assistance expands

Visual Intelligence can now analyze an open window or a selected portion of the display when Siri AI is enabled. Available actions include asking about visible content, finding a similar image and transferring recognized details into apps such as Calendar or Notes.

Screen recordings gain audio

The built-in Screenshot tool can include system audio in screen recordings through its Options menu, while still supporting an external microphone. The capability is aimed at workflows such as tutorials and recordings shared with colleagues, but protected content presents a limitation: the Apple TV app and some other applications may block system-audio capture.
