More than 100 members of the U.S. Congress have sent a letter urging Google and Spirit Airlines to halt a proposed $10 million transaction that would transfer internal corporate communications and records from the failed carrier to the technology company for artificial intelligence training.

Scope of the Proposed Data Acquisition

The proposed sale encompasses an extensive collection of internal operational data from Spirit Airlines. According to details shared by Representative Steven Horsford, the dataset includes approximately 100 million emails, 500 million Microsoft Teams messages, employment contracts, timecard records, payroll files, and tax information. Spirit announced plans to shut down operations in May, which led to nearly 1,000 job losses in the Las Vegas region represented by Horsford.

Lawmakers Challenge Anonymization Safeguards

Google has stated that it will not receive personally identifiable information and that the data will undergo third-party scrubbing prior to the transfer. However, the letter signed by 114 federal lawmakers—led by Horsford and Senator Elizabeth Warren—argues that conventional de-identification techniques may fail to protect employee privacy in modern AI applications. The lawmakers noted that stripping direct identifiers such as names and email addresses does not guarantee that a large corporate dataset remains anonymous.

Demands for Guardrails and Oversight

The congressional letter outlines specific conditions if the companies choose to move forward with the transaction. Lawmakers requested that Google and Spirit build a de-identification process incorporating feedback from former employees, exclude as much personnel information as possible, impose strict limits on data usage, and conduct an independent employee confidentiality review. Neither Google nor Spirit Airlines immediately responded to requests for comment.
