Jagex Pulls RuneScape Trailer After External Partner Uses Generative AI

Game developer Jagex has pulled a promotional trailer for an upcoming RuneScape quest update after viewers spotted obvious generative AI anomalies, including a player character rendered with six fingers. The trailer debuted during a keynote presentation at the annual RuneFest event in Birmingham before being removed following public reaction.

External Partner Violates Anti-AI Policy

Addressing the community on the 2007scape subreddit, Jagex representative Alec "Mod Sween" Sween explained that the trailer for the Dragon Slayer 2 update in RS3 was commissioned from a trusted external partner. The agency had explicitly promised Jagex that generative AI tools would not be used in producing the video. However, uncorrected visual defects—including an extra finger and sneaker-like soles on armored footwear—indicated that AI generation was involved.

Repeated Vendor Failures Prompt Policy Review

The incident marks the second time in short succession that Jagex has dealt with unapproved generative AI output from third-party partners, following a recent merchandise collaboration with 100 Thieves. Sween reaffirmed Jagex's strict policy against using generative AI for games, artwork, or promotional media, confirming that the studio prohibits partners from utilizing synthetic generation tools on its behalf.

Internal Oversight and Community Collaborations

Admitting that internal review teams should have identified the visual defects prior to the event, Jagex accepted responsibility for failing to catch the errors before broadcast. The developer is overhauling its vendor review procedures to prevent future occurrences and plans to commission community creators to produce new creative assets for the Dragon Slayer 2 update.
