iPadOS 27 is now available with several practical changes that do not depend on Apple Intelligence. According to Cult of Mac’s September 21, 2026 overview, the update improves external-drive and AirDrop transfers, app launch times, Safari controls, messaging synchronization and the appearance of Liquid Glass. These changes also matter for iPads that cannot use Apple’s AI features.
Faster Everyday Work
Apple says browsing and transferring files between an iPad and an external drive can be up to five times faster under iPadOS 27. AirDrop transfers have also been accelerated. The external-storage improvement is particularly relevant to iPad Air and iPad Pro users moving large photo, video or project files, although the source does not provide independent transfer measurements or identify the hardware used for Apple’s maximum-speed claim.
The operating system also includes optimizations intended to shorten app launch times. Cult of Mac additionally reports that users are encountering fewer crashes, pauses and animation stutters than under iPadOS 26, but it does not cite controlled performance or stability testing.
Interface Controls
Liquid Glass, the visual design introduced with iPadOS 26, receives sharper icons and adjustments intended to improve contrast and make refraction more consistent. A new slider under Settings > Appearance > Liquid Glass lets users move between a clearer interface and a more heavily tinted presentation, providing an option for people who found the earlier design too translucent.
Safari can now keep its menu bar permanently visible instead of hiding it automatically. The option builds on the Mac-style menu bar added to iPad in the previous operating-system release and may be useful when working with a keyboard and trackpad.
Mail, Messages and AI Limits
Apple has made backend changes intended to synchronize read status and unread counts more reliably across iOS, iPadOS and macOS in Mail and Messages. Cult of Mac also reports faster opening of individual emails and large threads, alongside search results that are less likely to be incomplete.
Apple Intelligence remains limited to iPad Air and iPad Pro models with M-series processors, according to the source. That excludes the budget iPad, including the A16 model released in 2025, but the file, interface, browser and communication improvements covered here do not rely on those AI capabilities.
