Google has started rolling out an offline mode for Live Translate, allowing supported Pixel phones to translate spoken conversations without an internet connection. TechRadar reported the rollout after it was identified by Android Authority, but access is currently restricted to three recent Pixel generations and a limited set of language pairs.
Translation Without Connectivity
Live Translate lets two people speak in different languages while Google Translate converts their conversation. The new offline option removes the feature's previous dependence on a network connection, making it usable where mobile coverage is unavailable, unreliable or costly. The source does not specify a rollout schedule beyond saying distribution has begun.
English Remains Required
Offline conversations currently work only between English and one of ten supported languages: French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Spanish, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Russian and Swedish. English must be one side of every exchange, so the offline mode cannot directly handle combinations such as French and German.
That constraint gives the feature 10 supported pairings rather than unrestricted translation among all 11 languages. The report does not indicate when Google might add more languages or enable offline conversations that exclude English.
Limited Pixel Support
The offline capability is available only for the Pixel 11 series, Pixel 10 line and Pixel 9 series. Older Pixel devices and phones from other manufacturers are excluded from this rollout, even though the existing online Live Translate feature is not limited to Pixel hardware.
Google enters an area where its largest mobile rivals already offer comparable offline functions. According to TechRadar, Apple's iOS Live Translation feature can work offline, while Samsung Galaxy phones provide similar offline translation functionality. The source does not report whether Google plans to extend its new mode to additional Android devices.
