Google is working on a feature within Google Photos to let users regenerate AI-rendered images of items saved in their digital wardrobe. Discovered in version 7.95 of the Android app by Android Authority through code modifications, the upcoming addition addresses a common issue where the app's initial synthetic generations fail to accurately reflect real-world clothing and accessories.
Refining Wardrobe Renderings in the Background
The Google Photos AI wardrobe feature automatically scans a user's photos to detect and render isolated digital representations of clothes, shoes, and eyewear. Currently, the app creates a single image upon initial detection without providing a built-in mechanism to refresh the result if the generated asset turns out distorted or inaccurate.
According to Android Authority, the new functionality introduces a "Regenerate image" option tucked inside the three-dot context menu on an individual item's details page. Selecting the option triggers the AI rendering process anew, which runs asynchronously in the background so users can safely navigate away while the image updates.
Impact on Virtual Outfit Virtualization
Because these individual wardrobe assets feed directly into Google Photos' virtual try-on features, inaccuracies in asset generation directly degrade how combinations of outfits are visualized. Providing a regeneration trigger gives users a practical workaround when a shirt or pair of glasses renders improperly on the first pass.
However, the feature relies on generative outputs rather than deterministic editing. In testing performed by Android Authority, regenerating an item introduced unpredictable changes—such as tweaking fabric colors, adjusting logo placement on a shirt, or adding physical details like nose pads to a pair of glasses. As a result, subsequent attempts may introduce different visual errors rather than guaranteed improvements.
