GitHub Expands HydraFusion Multi-Model Orchestration to VS Code and Copilot App

GitHub has expanded its HydraFusion research preview beyond the Copilot CLI, making the feature available in Visual Studio Code and the GitHub Copilot app. Accessible directly within the Copilot Chat model picker, HydraFusion dynamically orchestrates multiple AI models rather than relying on a single underlying engine.

Dynamic Multi-Model Workflows

HydraFusion approaches task execution as an optimization problem by evaluating capability signals across reasoning, code generation, debugging, and tool usage. Depending on the task requirements, it selects one of three distinct execution patterns: a Single workflow where one model handles the prompt, a Cascade pattern where a lightweight model drafts a response that is escalated to a stronger model if needed, or a Critique workflow where a drafting model revises its output based on feedback from an independent model family.

Unlike Copilot's standard Auto setting, which simply chooses a single model per request, HydraFusion coordinates multiple models and workflows within a single turn to maintain quality while optimizing efficiency.

Expanded Surface Area and Transparency Updates

The update introduces increased operational transparency and real-time progress indicators, offering clearer visibility into status steps during multi-stage or longer-running requests. Developers using VS Code version 1.140 or later (including VS Code Insiders) can activate the feature via the model picker or by toggling the chat.copilot.hydraFusion.enabled setting. For the GitHub Copilot app, users must update to the latest release and turn on HydraFusion within Settings.

Availability and Limitations

HydraFusion is available as a research preview to Copilot Pro, Pro+, Business, and Enterprise subscribers. For organizational and enterprise accounts, administrators must explicitly permit preview features before users can access the model picker option. GitHub notes that the feature remains subject to ongoing changes based on developer feedback.
