Google Launches EmbeddingGemma 2 and AI Edge Foresight for Local AI Notetaking

Google has introduced EmbeddingGemma 2, a lightweight multimodal model engineered to organize and search information directly on consumer hardware. Alongside the model release, the company launched Google AI Edge Foresight, a specialized macOS application designed to transform brief shorthand notes into structured summaries using offline audio processing.

Compact On-Device Architecture

Built on the Gemma 4 architecture, EmbeddingGemma 2 features 740 million parameters and is distributed under an Apache 2.0 license. The model is optimized to run locally within tight memory constraints, processing audio and text requests on client hardware. When quantized on a Google Pixel 11 Pro, the model requires approximately 191MB of active RAM for text-only operations and roughly 567MB for full multimodal performance. Mobile demonstrations of the model are available within the Google AI Edge Gallery apps on Android and iOS.

Intelligent Desktop Notetaking

To demonstrate the engine's capabilities on desktop computers, Google released the AI Edge Foresight app for Mac. The utility listens to in-person or video meetings in the background while users jot down brief shorthand bullet points. Leveraging EmbeddingGemma 2, the app enriches those abbreviated notes using the meeting transcript in real time. All transcriptions and audio recordings are processed entirely on the user's device rather than routed through cloud services.

Local Knowledge Integration

Beyond live meeting assistance, Google AI Edge Foresight connects to local project folders, reference files, diagrams, calendar data, and Google Drive storage. Users can query their aggregated personal knowledge base through a conversational chat interface, or activate a Live Assistance mode that listens and automatically provides answers to questions. AI Edge Foresight expands Google's lineup of Mac software, joining the existing AI Edge Gallery app and the AI Edge Eloquent tool for offline transcription.
