GitHub has begun rolling out updates across supported integrated development environments to address an issue that caused Copilot agent activity to disappear from usage metrics dashboards. The discrepancy affected organizations tracking agent usage and generated code, though GitHub emphasized that customer billing was not impacted by the tracking error.
SDK Migration Causes Attribution Gaps
The metric tracking drop occurred after several IDEs shifted Copilot agent sessions to the Copilot SDK. During this transition, client sessions failed to send identifying IDE metadata to GitHub's reporting pipeline. As a result, usage dashboards omitted a significant portion of agent interactions, while occasionally classifying non-CLI agent activity under Copilot CLI metrics.
The issue exclusively impacts IDE releases that adopted the Copilot SDK for agent mode. Earlier editor builds that did not transition to the SDK continued to record telemetry normally.
Rollout Schedule and Data Limitations
A fix is available immediately for Visual Studio Code, with updates for other supported IDEs expected to complete by November 2026. Because affected SDK sessions failed to collect client origin details, GitHub confirmed that missing historical telemetry cannot be backfilled. Metrics such as added and deleted lines of code will remain undercounted in 1-day and 28-day enterprise reports for any developer staying on an unpatched client build.
GitHub noted that Copilot CLI metrics will gradually normalize as developers install updated editor extensions. Developers who solely use the Copilot CLI do not need to apply any client-side fixes.
Balancing Server and Client Telemetry
The incident highlights how GitHub collects telemetry across developer environments. While server-side logging tracks active user identities, detailed metrics like accepted code suggestions and line counts depend on client-side editor events. Client data can be disrupted by outdated plugins, disabled settings, or local network firewalls. GitHub is expanding its use of server-side data to reduce reliance on local client telemetry, though full editor details continue to require updated client software.
