Venture capital funding into European defense technology startups reached $7.4 billion in 2026 to date, nearly tripling the $2.6 billion total recorded in 2025. According to a joint report from Dealroom and Resilience Media, defense technology is now the fastest-growing major segment of European venture capital, accounting for 11.1 percent of total European VC investment and 15 percent within EU member countries. Across NATO alliance members, defense tech venture investments hit $27.1 billion in 2026, up 1.9 times from 2025 levels.

Mega-Rounds and Regional Concentration Drive Growth

More than 85 percent of total European defense funding in 2026 has been concentrated in seven billion-dollar-plus mega-rounds for startups including Helsing, Anduril, Saronic, Shield AI, Quantum Systems, ICEYE, and Castelion. Outside mega-rounds, breakout funding between $15 million and $100 million has also doubled compared with 2025, while early-stage investments remain roughly steady.

Germany leads European defense funding by country, generating $3.5 billion in 2026. Munich has established itself as the continent's dominant defense hub, hosting 39 percent of enterprise value across European VC-backed defense startups and securing 40 percent of total regional sector funding in 2026. Combined, Munich-based Helsing and Quantum Systems hold an estimated valuation of $25.7 billion.

US Investors and Specialized Funds Expand Presence

The sector's investor pool is expanding rapidly. Dealroom recorded 310 investors participating in European defense deals in 2026 to date, with full-year totals projected to reach 620—up from 387 in 2025 and 99 in 2020. Specialized defense funds engaged in 34 percent of European rounds in 2025, while additional private equity, debt, grants, and project finance provided $2.4 billion to NATO and allied defense firms.

Capital from the United States makes up an increasing share of total funding, reaching 47 percent of European defense tech investments in 2026, up from 12 percent in 2020. Active US venture firms in the European market include Founders Fund, General Catalyst, Accel, Lightspeed, Y Combinator, and Axon.

Autonomous Systems Flourish Despite Technology Gaps

Unmanned and autonomous systems captured the majority of fresh capital. European drone startups gathered $4.7 billion across 40 rounds in 2026, while anti-drone tech secured $1.2 billion and maritime autonomous systems collected $796 million.

While Europe leads or competes globally in quantum cryptography, space observation, photonics, and drone tech, the report notes notable resource gaps in AI chips and processors, launch vehicles, brain-computer interfaces, and communications satellites relative to global competitors.
