Cloudflare has announced the open beta release of Cloudflare Traces, extending its automatic instrumentation capabilities beyond Workers to encompass the entire HTTP request lifecycle. According to Cloudflare, this service offers comprehensive end-to-end visibility into platform decisions across the edge network, detailing security rule evaluations, dynamic URL transformations, cache hits and misses, and final origin routing within a single unified execution timeline.
Distributed Tracing and OpenTelemetry Export
Cloudflare Traces fully adopts standard W3C traceparent headers to preserve seamless context propagation across complex distributed cloud environments. Under this architecture, incoming user requests can automatically join pre-existing traces whenever configured under an incoming trace propagation policy. Meanwhile, outbound backend requests consistently pass trace context downstream to origin servers, external microservices, and third-party APIs. Captured telemetry data can be inspected directly inside the Cloudflare dashboard or seamlessly exported to external observability platforms using the standard OpenTelemetry Protocol (OTLP).
To help organizations efficiently manage telemetry data volumes and control associated storage costs, engineering teams can configure baseline sampling rates at the domain level. Furthermore, Cloudflare Trace Rules allow developers to explicitly override these baseline sampling settings, capturing complete 100% traces for specific hostnames, client source IP addresses, custom debug headers, or geographic request origins using familiar Cloudflare Rules syntax.
MCP Server Integration and Upcoming Features
To streamline automated developer workflows, Cloudflare also introduced an Observability Model Context Protocol (MCP) server. This tool provides a dedicated SQL API interface, enabling AI coding assistants and automated tools to directly query production trace data, evaluate successful versus failed execution paths, and isolate complex performance bottlenecks right alongside application source code.
Cloudflare Traces is immediately available to administrators through the Cloudflare dashboard, administrative APIs, and Terraform providers. Cloudflare confirmed that long-term pricing will align with its unified Observability framework based on data ingestion volume and retention metrics beginning on December 1, 2026. Future enhancements will extend deep tracing coverage to edge DDoS rules, Cloudflare Access, and Workers Queues while supporting long-term data retention windows up to 365 days.
