Cloudflare Launches Basin Serverless Analytics Platform built on Apache Iceberg

Cloudflare has officially released Cloudflare Basin, making its open serverless data platform generally available. Previously announced during Birthday Week 2025 as the Cloudflare Data Platform, the renamed suite provides an end-to-end architecture to ingest, store, and query analytical data directly on Cloudflare's edge network using Apache Iceberg standard table formats and R2 Object Storage.

Core Components of the Basin Suite

The platform consolidates three core products designed to handle distinct stages of the analytical data lifecycle. Basin Pipelines, formerly Cloudflare Pipelines, ingests event streams from Workers, HTTP endpoints, or Cloudflare Logpush, transforms payload fields with SQL, and outputs Apache Iceberg tables or raw JSON/Parquet files to R2. Scaling improvements now allow individual streams to process up to 3 GB/s.

Basin Catalog acts as a managed Apache Iceberg REST catalog to organize metadata across datasets. It handles background maintenance tasks automatically, including unreferenced file cleanup, metadata manifest optimization, snapshot expiration based on retention rules, and configurable per-table compaction target sizes.

For analysis, Basin SQL provides a distributed, serverless SQL engine that reads Apache Iceberg tables managed by the catalog without requiring dedicated cluster management. The engine leverages network statistics generated by Basin Catalog to distribute queries into smaller sub-tasks across Cloudflare Workers.

Interoperability and Pricing Model

Because Basin operates on the open Apache Iceberg format within R2, stored data can be accessed directly by external compute frameworks such as DuckDB, PyIceberg, Snowflake, and Apache Spark. The platform relies on Cloudflare R2's zero-egress fee model, allowing cross-cloud and cross-region operations without data transfer penalties.

Pricing for Basin operates on a usage-based structure without hourly infrastructure reservations. Accounts incur charges only during active ingestion, automated maintenance processing, or SQL query execution. Existing configurations under the beta names Cloudflare Pipelines, R2 Data Catalog, and R2 SQL remain fully operational.
