Revolution Software is having artists redraw roughly 55,000 animation frames for Broken Sword – The Smoking Mirror: Reforged, a remake due in 2027. Creator Charles Cecil told TechRadar that human artists are responsible for the game’s animation and expression, although AI was used for an initial upscaling step. The distinction matters: the studio has not excluded AI from its workflow altogether.
Where AI Fits
According to Cecil, upscaling provided a starting point before artists added detail by hand. Backgrounds were scanned as black-and-white layouts, then developed with reference to the original game. He said the team wants human judgment behind the characters’ expressions and movements, rather than relying on upscaling to supply details that were absent from the older artwork.
The frame count is larger than the 30,000 cited for the 2024 remake of Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars. It describes the scale of the redraw, not a claim that every production step was done without AI.
More Than a Visual Update
Revolution Software is also revisiting material beyond the artwork. Cecil said the remake will use 40 voice lines recorded for the original game but left unused. It will add a three-tier hint system that responds to player progress and can be switched off, along with a more detailed Paris map for navigation.
What Players Can Expect
For Nintendo Switch 2, the planned control options include touchscreen, gamepad and a detached Joy-Con 2 used as a mouse. TechRadar’s report describes an upcoming remake, not a released game; it does not establish how the finished animation or controls will perform in players’ hands. Cecil’s account is a description of the studio’s production choices, not an independent assessment of the result.
