AWS puts deterministic code between AI agents and airline rebooking actions

AWS has published a new Step Functions pattern for airline disruption workflows in which Amazon Bedrock AgentCore agents propose replacement itineraries and compensation messages, while deterministic code validates any reservation change or payment before it is executed.

Agents propose, workflows decide

The pattern separates an agent’s non-deterministic reasoning from the actions that affect bookings and money. Step Functions handles orchestration, routing, fan-out, validation and retries around specialized AgentCore agents, rather than leaving those decisions inside an agent’s reasoning process.

An agent therefore cannot directly write a reservation or issue a payment. Its proposal must first pass deterministic validation, and Step Functions keeps an execution history for audit and review.

A different approach to multi-agent systems

AWS’s design moves supervisory decisions into the workflow layer. That differs from multi-agent setups in which a supervisor agent coordinates other agents and tool calls. The intended trade-off is to retain model-generated suggestions while placing a verifiable software checkpoint between those suggestions and consequential actions.

AWS presents airline rebooking as the example, but says the same structure could fit other financial or regulatory processes where an automated proposal should not immediately trigger a high-impact action.

Code execution as a reasoning aid

AWS also used a new Abnormal AI case study to argue that agents need access to computation when semantic reasoning is insufficient. According to AWS, Abnormal AI uses Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Code Interpreter in a managed, secured sandbox for real-time inline email threat detection.

The case study describes code execution as a way for an agent to calculate, process data and verify results, complementing an LLM’s language and semantic capabilities. AWS specifically points to tasks such as counting and converting data into structured reports as examples where computation can reduce reliance on reasoning alone.

The limitation of the pattern

The approach adds a control layer, but the source does not establish that it guarantees safe outcomes or report independent testing of the pattern. Its central claim is narrower: deterministic validation can check an agent’s proposal before the system performs a high-impact action.
