The ELO2 consortium has revealed the latest prototype of Roo-ver, a $42 million Australian lunar rover project scheduled for a 2030 mission to the Moon's South Pole. Unveiled during World Space Week at the Queensland University of Technology’s Lunar Testbed and Space Lab, the development model serves to evaluate vehicle dynamics and operational systems before final hardware construction begins.
Engineering for Extreme Lunar Conditions
The project relies on multiple prototype iterations to validate hardware against the severe environment of the lunar South Pole. Engineers are testing the chassis to ensure components survive high levels of radiation, abrasive regolith dust, and temperature swings ranging from minus 246°C to 121°C. To maintain traction across loose dust, the rover utilizes specially engineered wheels equipped with raised surface treads, known as grousers.
Resource Expertise and Remote Operations
Supported by $42 million from the Australian Space Agency’s Moon to Mars Initiative, the development effort is led by grantee EPE Oceania and technical partner Lunar Outpost Oceania. The ELO2 consortium aggregates contributions from local startups, academic institutions, manufacturing partners, and mining giant BHP. Operations teams will drive the vehicle remotely from control stations in Australia, applying heavy-industry remote operation techniques developed within the domestic mining sector.
Payload Integration and NASA Artemis Goals
Transport to the lunar surface will be handled by Intuitive Machines through NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services program. During its surface mission, Roo-ver will carry a dedicated NASA payload built to analyze soil composition. The gathered regolith data will support planning for resource utilization and contribute to NASA’s Artemis program, which aims to establish a long-term operational presence on the Moon.
