Valve has released a Steam Client Beta update for desktop and handheld users, with changes focused on Remote Play, Steam Input, Big Picture and Steam Deck reliability. A separate SteamOS 0.4.1 Beta update for Steam Frame also includes VR fixes.

Linux streaming fixes

The Remote Play changes target several Linux-related problems. The update fixes a mouse cursor issue when streaming from Linux with the SteamRT3C client, addresses capture lockups involving PipeWire on Linux and SteamOS, and reduces Pyrowave latency during PipeWire streaming. Streaming from a Windows computer should also have improved color accuracy. Valve added the -pyrowavestats command-line option for logging Pyrowave encoding performance.

Controller and overlay behavior

Steam Input now aims for more consistent trackpad sensitivity between Steam Deck and Steam Controller. The beta also corrects cases where Virtual menu modes displayed the wrong activation type and adds a Reorder Controller dialog for games using the Steam Input API. Reordering temporarily disconnects controllers, which can cause older games without proper hot-plug handling to lose input.

In Big Picture, the mouse remains hidden in the overlay until it moves, while trackpad typing issues during onscreen-keyboard startup have been fixed. Custom desktop configurations can now provide mouse input in the desktop overlay for Steam Controllers and other devices configured that way.

Steam Deck and system changes

The Steam Deck portion of the beta addresses header and footer flicker or invisibility during the first seconds after waking from sleep. When waking from sleep with a game running while the account is playing elsewhere, users can now choose to exit the local game. Without input for 60 seconds, the Deck can return to sleep.

The SteamRT3 Experimental Beta also stops Steam from overwriting PATH, LD_PRELOAD and LD_LIBRARY_PATH when launching games. Other general fixes include more complete game filtering in the Recordings & Screenshots dialog and improved wrapping for multi-line achievement notifications.
