Indie game Entropy blends classic turn-based JRPG combat reminiscent of Final Fantasy X with high-stakes mechanics inspired by tabletop games like Mordheim. In a recent interview, lead developer James Wragg detailed how the title implements permadeath within a party-based role-playing structure without breaking player progression.
Infinite Roster for High-Stakes Combat
To introduce meaningful stakes without soft-locking players, Entropy relies on a randomly generated mercenary hiring system. According to Wragg, classic JRPGs often lose their challenge once players understand their core mechanics. By providing an endless pool of recruitable party members, the developer created a system where characters can be permanently lost in battle without leaving the player short of allies.
Injuries, Risk, and Skillful Play
Rather than killing characters during every defeat, Entropy uses a system of persistent injuries. Knocked-out party members are more likely to suffer status penalties or severed body parts than immediate permanent death. Wragg noted that skilled players can complete the game with zero casualties, but the constant presence of lethal risk adds tension to every encounter.
