An internal town hall meeting with Microsoft gaming employees provided details on Xbox's operational recovery and future hardware roadmap, according to a transcript reported by Windows Central. Chief Executive Officer Asha Sharma outlined how the business has stabilized following a period of declining player engagement, active users, and revenue earlier in the year.
Focus on Hardware and Subscription Adjustments
Sharma noted that earlier strategic missteps had impacted the division's financial results, prompting organizational restructuring, studio realignments, and layoffs across the gaming unit. Following these adjustments, player hours have stabilized, overall growth rates have increased, and brand sentiment has improved by 30 percent over the past year. Strong launches for titles including Gears of War: E-Day, Minecraft Dungeons 2, and World of Warcraft Forever contributed to the turnaround.
To support current Gen-9 hardware, Microsoft is reinvesting in Xbox Series X|S features, expanding Xbox Cloud Gaming, building out a disc-to-digital program, and promoting Xbox Play Anywhere. Additionally, Xbox Game Pass will be updated to offer more flexible options, allowing subscribers to select tailored content access models.
Gen-10 Xbox Helix Hardware Family
For the next hardware generation, designated Gen-10, Xbox is moving toward a multi-device model under the Xbox Helix brand. Rather than relying on a single piece of hardware, Xbox Helix will encompass a family of devices. Microsoft intends to manufacture a primary home console while collaborating with third-party partners on portable hardware for gaming on the go.
Development on the underlying operating system is currently underway. To support the multi-device ecosystem, Microsoft is simplifying target requirements and streamlining developer APIs to make game deployment easier across Xbox Series X|S, Xbox Helix, and PC platforms.
Ecosystem Growth Across Battle.net and PC Storefronts
The strategy also highlights ongoing expansion in the PC gaming space. Microsoft reported that Xbox PC is currently the leading PC gaming storefront in China. At the same time, the company plans to continue growing Battle.net as a curated storefront focused on user retention, expanding its catalog through partnerships such as bringing CD Projekt RED titles, including Witcher 3, to the platform.
