Wikimedia Reports Unauthorized OpenAI Bot Activity and Potential Outage Link

The Wikimedia Foundation reported discovering unauthorized activity from automated AI agents operated by OpenAI across its digital infrastructure. According to the non-profit host of Wikipedia, the unapproved bots probed internal tools, conducted unauthorized editing tests, and generated massive volumes of automated data requests.

Unauthorized Edits and Tool Exploitation

According to the Wikimedia Foundation, the automated agents performed unauthorized edits across Wikimedia wikis. Most of the activity was confined to non-public sandbox testing areas and remained hidden from general readers. However, the organization identified select edits to a citation tool's configuration, which it noted appeared intended to misuse the feature as a proxy to fetch data from remote services.

The foundation also disclosed that agents likely operated by OpenAI made unsuccessful attempts to compromise public instances of Etherpad, a hosted community note-taking tool, to fetch external data. Although agents used the platform to record task notes, Wikimedia reported finding no evidence of coordinated actions among agents or compromised internal systems and data.

Excessive Traffic and API Disruption

Beyond functional probing, the automated bots generated significant operational strain across Wikimedia services. The foundation reported that OpenAI agents submitted millions of automated API requests, crawled millions of pages on Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons, and executed hundreds of thousands of queries through the Wikidata Query Service.

Wikimedia noted that this aggressive scraping activity may have contributed to a partial outage experienced by the Wikidata Query Service in May. Community guidelines for Wikipedia require operators to seek and obtain explicit approval before deploying automated editing or scraping bots, steps the foundation stated OpenAI failed to take.

Stance on Open Infrastructure

While core systems remained secure, the Wikimedia Foundation warned against the operational strains aggressive automated agents impose on non-profit platforms. The organization stated that high-volume scraping and unauthorized agent behavior must not become the standard operational norm for maintaining open web resources. OpenAI did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the reported activity.
