Wi-Fi Alliance Certifications Hint at New PlayStation Portal Hardware Revision

Regulatory filings from the Wi-Fi Alliance have uncovered two unannounced PlayStation devices carrying model numbers CFI-Y2000 and CFI-Y2105. The certification details suggest potential hardware updates to Sony's PlayStation Portal streaming device, which originally debuted in late 2023 under model number CFI-Y1001.

Android 15 and Thin-Client Architecture

The newly spotted devices are listed under the Gaming Console/Peripherals category and run on Android 15. This operating system matches the software foundation of the original PlayStation Portal, distinguishing it from the custom operating system used on the flagship PlayStation 5 console.

Using an Android thin-client model fits into Sony's broader hardware approach. In June, Sony noted that cloud streaming architectures require minimal onboard memory, helping lower production costs during periods of rising memory prices. The device relies on streaming titles locally from a home console or directly from Sony's cloud servers rather than rendering games natively.

Wi-Fi Bandwidth and Screen Speculation

Despite the advance in model numbering, the certification documentation shows conservative wireless networking specifications. Both CFI-Y2000 and CFI-Y2105 are certified for single-stream 1×1 Wi-Fi across 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies, with no indication of 6GHz Wi-Fi support or added antenna capacity.

While the filings omit display parameters, hardware leaker KeplerL2 reported earlier this year that Sony was preparing an OLED version of the Portal handheld. The initial 2023 release uses an 8-inch LCD display panel.

Sony's Handheld Product Strategy

Updating the PlayStation Portal design allows Sony to keep a dedicated streaming accessory in its product line alongside separate expectations for future native hardware. Reports indicate Sony is also developing a standalone handheld designed to run games natively on next-generation AMD graphics architecture. Sony did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the Wi-Fi Alliance listings.
