Vantora, the startup builder previously known as UP.Labs, has received a $100 million investment from Silversmith Capital Partners. The company is also narrowing its model: it will focus on ventures built specifically for corporate partners, with an increased emphasis on physical AI.

A More Proprietary Model

Vantora's corporate partners invest in the startups it creates and become their first customers. Under the revised structure, those partners can also absorb the ventures into their main businesses instead of allowing the technology to be offered more broadly. Founder and CEO John Kuolt described the approach to TechCrunch as creating a proprietary acquisition pipeline.

Why Physical AI Fits

Kuolt said the change allows Vantora to pursue sensitive projects that corporate customers would not want sold to competitors. He pointed to industrial companies seeking to add autonomous capabilities to existing hardware and machinery while retaining control of the resulting intelligence layer.

The earlier model sometimes forced Vantora to abandon ideas that were strategically valuable to a partner but unsuitable for the wider market. Kuolt cited an AI concept developed around J.B. Hunt's business that was previously dropped because the partner did not want it commercialized externally.

Corporate Partnerships

The company launched in 2022 with Porsche as its first corporate partner and has since created several startups for the automaker. It has also reached agreements with Alaska Airlines, J.B. Hunt, Wabash and TDG, the parent company of Ashley Furniture. Vantora said it is now working with additional, unnamed industrial manufacturing companies and customers in oil and gas.

First Outside Investment

UP.Labs was previously associated with venture firm Up.Partners but had no financial tie to it, according to Kuolt. The renamed company remains in the same California office space as Up.Partners while operating independently. The Silversmith investment is Vantora's first external funding.
