Valve has released SteamOS 3.8.28 as a stable update for all supported devices, with changes spanning Steam Deck, Steam Machine and a growing range of third-party gaming handhelds. The release includes a newer Mesa graphics driver, improved VRAM management and the Linux kernel 6.18.50.

Graphics and system fixes

The updated Mesa driver brings ray-tracing performance and functionality improvements, while the revised VRAM handling is intended to improve performance and stability on systems with limited video memory. Valve also fixed several startup and resume problems, including long launch delays on some non-Valve devices and performance degradation after sleep on systems with AMD discrete GPUs.

The release addresses black screens in some launchers, HDMI display lockups in Desktop Mode, unreliable Wi-Fi connections with certain adapters and failures applying earlier SteamOS updates. It also fixes Firefox fullscreen freezes, a blank right eye in some Unreal Engine 5 VR games and freezes triggered by removing an SD card during suspend.

Support beyond Valve hardware

SteamOS 3.8.28 expands support for MSI Claw, OneXPlayer, AYANEO and Lenovo Legion Go hardware. The update adds initial gamepad support for MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ and Konkr FIT, adds AYANEO Pocket S2 support, and updates compatibility with several OneXPlayer models and firmware versions.

The release also fixes handheld-specific issues, including missing buttons, failed gyroscope initialization, blocked rumble and inaccurate battery displays. One tradeoff affects OneXPlayer F1 models: correcting rumble and joystick polling means the M1 (left) extra shoulder button no longer functions.

Controllers, audio and what comes next

SteamOS now supports the 2026 Steam Controller through its built-in hid_steam driver, allowing native controller applications to use it when Steam is not running. It also adds support for waking from the 2015 Steam Controller Wireless Adapter and preliminary support for the Steam Frame Wireless Adapter.

Audio changes include a system-wide reset option, fixes for some HDMI dropouts, more reliable HDMI hotplug detection and a setting to prefer lower-latency Bluetooth codecs. Valve has already begun preview releases of SteamOS 3.9, but that version is not part of this stable release and its general availability remains unspecified.
