Unity Technologies has released an updated automotive human-machine interface (HMI) template for Unity Industry, targeting embedded-style hardware platforms. Available in the Unity Hub for project setups using Unity 6.3 or later, the sample updates an HMI template originally introduced in 2021. The release highlights real-time 3D rendering on hardware with limited resources, reaching frame rates up to 60 frames per second on a Linux-based Raspberry Pi 5.

Modular Architecture for Embedded Systems

The template is engineered to help developers target constrained vehicular platforms, such as embedded Linux, QNX, and Android Automotive. To support stable frame pacing, responsive controls, and predictable memory usage on low-power devices, Unity structured the software architecture into three distinct layers: data processing, user interface presentation, and 3D simulation. This separation allows engineers to stream custom telemetry data, UI designers to adjust layout aesthetics, and technical artists to replace vehicle assets independently.

Built-In Traffic Simulation and Interface Tools

The project includes a digital instrument cluster that displays operational metrics including vehicle speed, driving status, current gear, and system notifications. An Advanced Driver Assistance System visualizer links to a built-in city traffic simulation, allowing developers to render simulated lane activity, pedestrian movement, crosswalks, surrounding vehicles, and traffic light signals. The template also integrates controls for heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and door locks, alongside a global theming engine that alters interface accent colors to match brand styling or day and night display modes.

Applicability Beyond Automotive Workflows

Although designed primarily for automotive dashboards and infotainment environments, Unity built the system architecture to support broader embedded interface work. Teams developing control panels for industrial machinery, medical equipment, aerospace displays, and robotics can utilize the core data and presentation pipeline. Developers can access the template by creating a new project in the Unity Hub while choosing Unity 6.3 as the editor version.
