Teen Rescued from Cliff Face After Claude AI Provides Flawed Hiking Directions

A 16-year-old hiker in British Columbia was rescued by helicopter after following incorrect wilderness navigation guidance generated by the AI chatbot Claude. The incident marks what emergency personnel believe to be the first search and rescue extraction caused directly by AI-generated trail directions.

Off-Course Descent into Technical Terrain

Bryce Vincent Gowryluk began his trek on Saturday morning by taking a gondola up Grouse Mountain. While ascending, he asked Claude to generate a round-trip route to nearby Crown Mountain, a trek that typically requires eight hours and over 2,000 feet of elevation gain. Rather than keeping him on established paths, the chatbot's instructions guided Gowryluk off route through Crown Pass and Crater Slabs into an unfamiliar, boulder-strewn valley.

Stranded at Widowmaker Arete

The incorrect directions brought Gowryluk to the headwall of the Widowmaker Arete, a sheer 1,700-foot wall that requires technical climbing gear, clear planning, and ropes. Lacking protective equipment, he became stuck on the steep terrain. Unable to proceed up the cliff face or safely climb back down, he phoned his mother and then contacted emergency services for help.

Aerial Rescue and Spatial Awareness Risks

North Shore Rescue deployed a helicopter to the site, but the proximity of the rock wall prevented rotor access. Two rescue members were hoisted down to lift Gowryluk from the cliff before flying him to a base near Cleveland Dam. Following the retrieval, search manager Paul Markey cautioned against using generative AI for route planning, noting that such models lack spatial awareness and real-world geographical experience. The rescue highlights growing safety risks associated with digital navigation tools, following a July incident in which Google Maps underestimated a 14-hour hike as a five-hour trip.
