Supabase has announced a suite of new backend tools designed for agent-assisted software development, moving database management, environment configurations, and compute definitions into local source code. Revealed at Supabase Select 2026, the updates allow AI coding agents to edit database schemas directly, run local environments without Docker, and deploy long-running services alongside databases.

Code-Driven Backend Workflows and Local Development

Developers can now manage backend schemas and project configurations in source control rather than through dashboard interfaces. Under Declarative Schemas 2.0, agents update SQL schema files as the source of truth, while a new diff engine called pg-delta generates and applies database migrations. Settings for authentication providers, storage buckets, and API limits reside in a local configuration file that syncs with remote environments using the Supabase CLI.

Local development supports native background processes alongside Docker, enabling agents to run side-by-side local environments across multiple repository directories. The native process stack is currently available in alpha as an optional feature.

Long-Running Compute and Custom MCP Server Integration

The platform introduced Supabase Compute, a Linux execution environment for running persistent services, agents, background workers, and sandboxes in the same project as the primary database. Managed via the CLI or Management API, Compute supports custom CPU and memory allocations, HTTP request load balancing across instances, and network security controls to limit database access. Compute is currently in private alpha.

For user-facing applications, developers can deploy application-specific Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers using Supabase Edge Functions. This setup lets external AI clients perform authorized user actions within an application while adhering to established Row Level Security policies.
