Valve has released SteamOS 3.9.2 Beta with system fixes aimed at handheld and living-room gaming hardware. The update addresses problems with variable refresh rate, Steam Remote Play, boot behavior, suspend and resume, wireless connections, language input and compatibility with newer devices.
From Preview to Beta
SteamOS 3.9 had previously been available as a Preview build, while SteamOS 3.8.28 has now moved to stable. The 3.9 branch brings an updated Arch Linux base, Plasma 6.7.3 in Desktop Mode and broader changes intended to improve compatibility across supported systems. SteamOS 3.9.2 Beta is therefore an incremental test release rather than a separate platform launch.
Gaming and display fixes
The update fixes a non-working Disable Frame Limiter setting when VRR is enabled and corrects frame-limiter behavior for VR titles streamed from Steam Machine to Steam Frame. It also resolves a Remote Play failure on Steam Machine when no external display is connected. Certain games, including ELDEN RING and DARK SOULS III, should no longer fail to run on recent Panther Lake Intel CPUs, while a separate crash affecting Forza Horizon 6 on Legion Go 2 is addressed in the wider SteamOS 3.9 changes.
Boot, resume and input reliability
Several regressions from earlier 3.9 previews are repaired, including slower boot times, a briefly disappearing boot logo, unexpected Steam Machine wake-ups from hibernation, broken virtual-keyboard input for some languages and nested Desktop Mode problems. The release also fixes boot-screen corruption on Intel PTL+ devices, suspend and resume issues on systems with RDNA1 or RDNA2 dedicated GPUs, and excessive fan speed after sleep on some ASUS hardware.
Developer caveat
New installations now use wpa_supplicant by default, with fast Wi-Fi reconnection after sleep added to that setup. Existing installations continue using iwd unless users manually switch the backend in Developer Settings. SteamOS 3.9 also includes preliminary hibernation support, but it is not exposed in the Game Mode interface. Other changes include improved virtual-machine graphics support, a Linux kernel rebased on Linux 7.2 and preliminary brightness control for Legion Go 2.
