Valve has released SteamOS 0.4.1 as an opt-in Beta update for Steam Frame, its VR hardware platform. The build addresses dashboard behavior, spectator viewing, streaming, audio and several stability problems, while adding controls intended to make the headset’s output easier to share and manage.

A separate SteamOS build

SteamOS 0.4.1 for Steam Frame is separate from the versions used on Steam Deck and Steam Machine, with features tailored to the VR device. Users can access the Beta by changing the update channel under Settings, System and System Update Channel. The source does not state a general release date for the stable version.

Spectator view gets more control

Spectator view is now smoothed by default, reducing the apparent jitter in the external view of what a headset user sees. Valve has also added a Dominant Eye setting in VR Settings, which determines the eye used for spectator view and screenshots. Smoothing can be disabled from the developer options in VR Settings.

The view can be accessed on a PC through Steam’s Remote Play settings or on devices that support Steam Link. These changes make the shared view a more configurable part of the Steam Frame experience rather than a fixed output.

Dashboard and streaming fixes

The update fixes an unnecessary dashboard recentering issue, improves focus handling and gamepad navigation, and addresses flickering dashboard panels. It also fixes a case where the keyboard failed to appear during streaming and improves proximity-sensor detection.

A companion Steam Client Update for Frame adds gamepad navigation to the Streaming menu, support for displaying battery percentage in the Dashboard Bar, and improved color accuracy when streaming non-VR games from a Windows PC.

Broader system changes

SteamOS 0.4.1 includes SteamVR 2.18.1, an updated embedded browser with crash fixes and Linux H.264 detection fixes, and audio changes intended to align volume between downmix and binaural-rendering formats. Valve also lists general performance and stability improvements.

GamingOnLinux reported that accounts of the newly released Steam Frame experience had been rough across its Discord, comments and other channels. That assessment is attributed to the publication’s collected reports; the source does not provide independent testing or quantified reliability data.
