Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and Dimensity 9600 Pro bring 2nm designs to flagship phones

Editorial illustration of one smartphone processor chip split between warm high performance and cool energy efficiency.

Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and MediaTek's Dimensity 9600 Pro are the companies' new flagship mobile platforms, and both use TSMC's 2nm manufacturing node. The chips are expected in 2027 devices, although some phones using them are already available in China and are scheduled for wider launches, according to Android Central.

Similar process, different CPU strategies

Both platforms add LPDDR6 memory and UFS 5.0 storage support, but their processor designs remain distinct. Qualcomm uses two custom cores reaching 5GHz alongside six performance cores at up to 4.0GHz, with 16MB of cache. The company claims 13% higher performance and 37% better efficiency from the new cores.

MediaTek uses a 2+3+3 arrangement built around Arm cores: two C2-Ultra cores reach 4.55GHz, while six C2-Pro cores run in separate clusters at up to 4.35GHz and 3.1GHz. MediaTek claims a 17% performance increase, plus 61% better multi-core energy efficiency and 37% better single-core efficiency.

Neural graphics raise the stakes

The GPU comparison is less predictable than in previous generations. MediaTek's Mali-G2-Ultra-NX uses neural technology, while Qualcomm's Adreno matrix cores pursue a similar direction. Qualcomm claims 44% higher graphics performance and 40% better energy efficiency, whereas MediaTek lists 27% higher performance and 24% better efficiency under load.

Those figures are manufacturer claims, and the source does not provide independent testing. Thermal behavior is an especially important open question: Android Central reported overheating on phones using the previous Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, while also describing stronger thermal management from MediaTek's earlier platform.

Cameras and device availability

Qualcomm's image-processing platform supports 3K60 and 4K60 ultra-low-light video, along with 4K240 slow motion. MediaTek lists 8K60 and 4K240 recording, with neural-processing integration. Whether phone makers expose all of these capabilities will depend on their implementations.

OPPO and Vivo are expected to launch global flagship phones using the platforms in October. Xiaomi has not confirmed an international date for the Xiaomi 18 Pro, though India is expected to receive it later in the year. In North America, Motorola is preparing the Signature 27 with Qualcomm's chip ahead of the holiday season.
