Pixel Buds app update lets Gemini control audio and settings

Google is moving Gemini from a chat interface into ambient hardware control. The latest Pixel Buds companion app update, version 1.0.981607934, enables voice commands to adjust EQ presets, active noise cancellation, conversation detection, and touch controls directly through the Gemini overlay.

What changed in the app update

After updating to Pixel Buds app version 1.0.981607934, users can invoke Gemini with voice commands like "Hey Google, turn up the bass" or "Hey Google, turn on noise cancellation." The assistant responds with a verbal confirmation and displays a "Connecting to Pixel Buds" message in the Gemini overlay. On devices without the updated app, the same commands open the system Bluetooth settings page instead, limiting functionality.

Rollout and device requirements

The update is rolling out widely via the Play Store as of September 28, 2026, coinciding with the Pixel 11 launch. The voice control feature requires the updated companion app. Three additional features previewed by Google—Dynamic ANC, Pixel Watch sleep sync, and Live Translate via tap—require a separate firmware update and are not yet available in this app release.

What is still pending

Dynamic ANC, which adjusts noise cancellation when the earbuds shift in the ear, Pixel Watch sleep sync that pauses music and silences notifications, and Live Translate triggered by tapping the buds all depend on an upcoming firmware update. Google has not announced a release date for this firmware.
