The IVM Development Group has released pg_ivm 1.16, updating the PostgreSQL extension designed to provide Incremental View Maintenance for materialized views. The v1.16 release resolves critical edge cases that caused segmentation faults, spurious transaction failures, and errors with high Object Identifier values.
Transaction Locks and Crash Fixes
A core fix in version 1.16 resolves spurious transaction failures caused by lock release timing. Previously, locks acquired on incrementally maintained materialized views to avoid concurrent modification anomalies could linger until transaction commit, triggering lock error failures even when no concurrent incremental maintenance was taking place. The fix, contributed by Dzmitry Levankou, also eliminates intermittent failures in database isolation tests under heavy load.
Developer Yugo Nagata addressed a crash scenario where an incrementally maintained materialized view was both maintained and dropped within the same transaction. That sequence previously led to a segmentation fault during execution.
Handling High OIDs and Custom Data Types
The update also addresses integer overflow constraints during view maintenance. Contributor Artur Aleksander Kanošin resolved an issue where global Object Identifier counter values exceeding INT_MAX caused incremental view maintenance operations to fail.
In addition, Yugo Nagata repaired maintenance failures tied to data types without default equality operators. Prior to this fix, updates to a base table containing such a column type would break view maintenance, even if the view definition did not reference that specific column.
Immediate Incremental Materialized Views
The pg_ivm extension enables immediate Incremental View Maintenance in PostgreSQL environments. Rather than requiring full recomputation of a materialized view, the module computes and applies only the incremental changes immediately after a base table receives modifications, lowering the overhead of maintaining up-to-date view results.
