OpenRouter has made US in-region routing generally available to business and enterprise customers. Requests sent through its US endpoint are decrypted, processed and served within the United States, or rejected when no compliant route is available.

Why Routing Matters

The change addresses a data-residency concern created by third-party access to open-weight models. OpenRouter says roughly 60% of tokens from US-originating requests now use open-weight models, with Chinese models making up the majority of that traffic. Separately, Hugging Face data from February showed Chinese developers accounted for 41% of model downloads over the preceding 12 months, compared with 36.5% for US developers.

How the US Endpoint Works

OpenRouter’s standard global endpoint can select an eligible provider in any region. Its US endpoint, us.openrouter.ai, filters the provider pool to endpoints that OpenRouter has approved as operating in the country. Workspace, team and API-key controls can enforce the restriction through OpenRouter Guardrails, while tools that would send prompt data outside the US are disabled on the regional endpoint.

Models and Providers

The eligible catalog includes proprietary models from OpenAI and Anthropic alongside open-weight models from Chinese labs. The source specifically identifies DeepSeek V4 Pro, Kimi K3 and GLM 5.2 as available through US routing because Baseten, Fireworks and Azure serve them from US data centers. OpenRouter maintains a live list of supported models and providers.

Limits and Earlier Access

If no approved US provider can serve a requested model, OpenRouter returns a 404 error rather than routing the request globally. The feature does not change where a model was developed; it changes which provider-hosted copy handles the request. US customers could already achieve similar residency by self-hosting models or using a US provider directly. OpenRouter had offered US routing to enterprise customers by request before the general-availability release. European in-region routing has been available since October 2025.
