At its DevDay event, OpenAI announced Dots, a set of continuous, always-on AI agents integrated into ChatGPT. Powered by the GPT-6 Astra model, these agents operate autonomously in the background to complete multi-step goals without requiring continuous user prompts. Each agent runs inside its own dedicated cloud virtual machine, allowing users to inspect ongoing execution state at any time.

Continuous Execution across Cloud and Local Workflows

Dots agents can maintain ongoing background projects while executing new tasks. Users can interact with their agent across ChatGPT desktop, web, and mobile interfaces, as well as third-party collaboration platforms including Slack and Microsoft Teams. Context is preserved across channels, enabling seamless cross-platform task transfers. With explicit permissions granted, an agent can also operate directly on a user's local laptop, in addition to accessing more than 4,000 integrations supported by OpenAI's plugin architecture.

When idle, agents perform proactive research using read-only access to connected applications, preventing unauthorized messaging or data modifications. Actions involving account access or data sharing trigger an auto-review process, while an automated monitoring system retains authority to pause or halt agents if safety concerns arise.

Enterprise Capabilities and Platform Governance

OpenAI is also previewing specialist agents designed for defined corporate roles, such as procurement and invoice processing. These enterprise agents are provisioned with specific organizational credentials. Microsoft is collaborating with OpenAI to integrate management of these specialist agents into Agent 365 governance and security controls.

Availability and Plan Limits

Dots is rolling out to ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium subscribers, though Pro users in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the UK are currently excluded. Workspace administrators can enable a beta version for Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare accounts. Pro and Business Premium plans include one agent at no additional charge, with usage exempt from standard plan caps during the first month. OpenAI has not yet revealed pricing for additional agents or expanded resource tiers.
