Healthcare startup Nolla Health announced on Monday that adult residents in Utah can now receive automated acne treatment prescriptions generated by artificial intelligence. According to details reported by Bloomberg, users scan their faces using the Nolla Health app, allowing an AI system to evaluate acne severity and autonomously generate a prescription.
Phased Physician Oversight Model
The service is launching as a pilot program designed around a gradual reduction in direct medical supervision. For the initial 100 patients, two human physicians must evaluate and approve each AI-generated prescription before it is released to the user. For subsequent patients up to a total of 500, physicians will transition to reviewing prescriptions after they have already been issued.
Beyond the 500-patient mark, doctor oversight drops to a monthly sampling of at least 10% of all issued prescriptions. However, mandatory human reviews remain required for every incident involving side effects or patient escalations.
Initial Prescriptions vs. Renewals
Earlier this year, Utah state regulators signed off on allowing AI tools to renew select existing medications. Nolla Health claims its program, called Nolla Derm, represents the first instance in the United States where an AI system is authorized to grant original, initial prescriptions rather than routine renewals. The startup framed the project as a way to handle low-acuity cases so dermatologists can dedicate time to complex, high-risk patients.
Pricing, Scope, and Fallback Controls
The prescription service carries a subscription cost of $4.99 per month. Eligibility is restricted to Utah residents who are at least 18 years old and exhibit mild-to-moderate acne.
The AI is currently configured to prescribe up to eight distinct skin treatments. If the system fails to arrive at a confident treatment decision during face scanning, Nolla Health automatically reroutes the user to a human physician.
