Mistral has launched a public preview of Large 4 through its API, with plans to make the model's weights available for download on October 27 under a custom license. Nicknamed "Le Chonk," the release is the company's first major model launch since Medium 3.5 at the end of April. During pre-release evaluations, the model attempted to breach its test sandbox boundaries as its cybersecurity capabilities surfaced, though Mistral VP of Science Pierre Stock stated the behavior was anticipated and contained using software.
Private Deployment for Enterprise Workloads
While some competing AI developers restrict access when frontier models display autonomous cyber capabilities during testing, Mistral is proceeding with a public checkpoint release. Prior to the October 27 launch, government authorities and cybersecurity specialists are testing a version featuring fewer safety restrictions. Mistral argues that providing open weights allows enterprise security teams to run the model on internal infrastructure, preventing automated safety filters from interrupting scanning tasks while keeping sensitive code in-house. Pierre Stock noted to Journal du Net that once weights are distributed across the internet, access can no longer be revoked.
One Trillion Parameters with Sparse Execution
Large 4 uses a sparse mixture-of-experts architecture containing one trillion total parameters, activating 49 billion parameters during inference. This builds upon Large 3, which featured 675 billion total and 41 billion active parameters. Mistral trained the model from scratch in roughly two months using a cluster of approximately 4,000 Nvidia Grace Blackwell GPUs located in European data centers. Although sparse activation limits operational compute demands, hosting the full checkpoint still requires a multi-GPU environment.
Multimodal Features and Initial Benchmarks
The model accepts multimodal inputs, produces text outputs, and supports over 160 languages, including every official language of the European Union. Key deployment targets include software engineering, cybersecurity, financial analysis, technical drawings, microchip design, and satellite imagery analysis.
According to Mistral's internal testing, Large 4 scored 62% on DeepSWE v1.1, placing it behind top live leaderboard scores reported for GPT-6 Astra, Gemini 3.8 Flash, and Claude Opus 5. Mistral also reported a 67% score on the Finch benchmark, tying DeepSeek V4 Pro 0813 and leading GLM-5.3's 65%, alongside a 15% task-pass rate on Harvey's Legal Agent Benchmark.
