Microsoft has introduced the Canvas authoring plugin to simplify the creation of Azure canvases within Copilot workflows. An Azure canvas serves as a shared, interactive workspace designed for developers and AI agents to collaborate on cloud infrastructure tasks. Rather than requiring engineers to manually build authentication, subscription scoping, shared state, and host integration from scratch, the plugin automates scaffolding by guiding Copilot through native canvas generation routines.
Scaffolding Azure Workspaces with Copilot
Developers can install the Canvas authoring plugin through the Awesome Copilot marketplace. Once active in a project folder, users prompt Copilot to construct a canvas app using the native create-canvas skill along with a read-only Azure starter blueprint. The tool generates a project structure that displays subscription-scoped data, such as listing Azure resource groups, once an explicit subscription is selected.
To finalize deployment, developers build the output files, reload the canvas provider, and authenticate using the Azure CLI. The authoring workflow enforces explicit resource scoping, keeping validation routines, cancellation options, and read-only behavior intact unless the user explicitly grants approval for modification tasks, such as scaling Azure Container Apps.
Under the Hood of Microsoft Canvas Toolkit
The authoring plugin builds upon `@microsoft/canvas-toolkit`, an npm package that supplies the underlying runtime for canvas applications. Because Copilot generates standard toolkit projects, developers retain full ownership of the source code and can extend application logic using standard web development tooling.
The Microsoft Canvas Toolkit provides foundational infrastructure, including Azure CLI and SDK credential authentication, helpers for Azure Resource Manager APIs, and theme-aware UI component styles. For server operations, it incorporates a local backend that handles origin verification, content security policies, and request validation. Additionally, the toolkit manages real-time state synchronization across agent and user interactions, while providing an integration bridge that links canvas UI buttons directly to agent prompts.
