Microsoft has unveiled a major redesign of the Windows 11 Search experience, expanding the Taskbar search bar from a file-indexing tool into an active system controller capable of executing administrative and operational tasks directly across the PC.
Controlling Settings Directly from the Taskbar
Unveiled at Microsoft's Windows and Surface event, the updated Search experience allows users to perform thousands of system actions without opening dedicated settings menus. Windows lead Pavan Davuluri demonstrated on stage how the interface handles direct control over hardware and operating system features.
Rolling out to Windows 11 PCs starting this fall, the search bar can execute actions such as turning on dark mode, toggling Do Not Disturb, and adjusting hardware settings like the microphone volume slider. The interface can also initiate communications, such as sending text messages directly from the search field.
Embedded Copilot and Faster File Access
Alongside operating system controls, Microsoft integrated its Copilot assistant directly into the Search interface. Users can ask Copilot questions and read answers within the Search overlay without switching to a separate application, though a shortcut remains available for users who prefer opening the full Copilot app.
According to Davuluri, the core design of the new Search tool focuses on speed and efficiency, helping users locate their local files, system settings, and installed applications faster than previous iterations.
Foundation for Agentic Windows Features
Microsoft highlighted the updated Search experience as an early user-facing example of its broader push toward an agentic architecture in Windows 11. The feature builds upon underlying AI models and developer infrastructure detailed during the presentation, designed to handle multi-step actions through natural language search.
